Step 1 to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Stock Up
While trying to outlive the undead, it is very important to have a storage of necessities. That means stock up on everything you seriously can not live without. This includes many things, such as; food, water, household necessities, weapons, and spam.
Food. I know that this may sound very simple, but a lot of people have failed to take into account many things. First, that supplies are limited. When word of the apocalypse gets out, you better believe that everyone and their grandmother will be running to the local supermarket to stock up. If you're reading this, you're one step ahead of them. Go get supplies now. Nothing that will run out of course, but how about canned food and bottles of water? Those won't go bad for months on end, and you can just rotate out your cupboard when they begin to. Don't waste money on perishables. Stick to the main things, canned corn, canned fruit, beans, dried fruit, pudding, and rice. If you don't like those, then find some other non-perishable food that you do like, and stick to that. Just remember to enjoy the perishable food while you still can.
Water. Now a lot of you are thinking, why stock up on water? Well because once the zombies attack, it won't be long until running water is a thing of the past. Who do you think is going to work at the water purifying factory when the undead are hunting down anyone not in hiding? No one, that's who. So for awhile it will still be fine to drink tap water, but there will be a point and time where you will have to switch to bottled water. When that time comes you want to make sure you have a stock of it in the back of your closet, trust me.
Household necessities. A lot of people will overlook this also. You're not going to think about them, and then one day you'll have to fight off your neighbor for them. Household necessities include shampoo, soap, trash bags, sponges, light bulbs, flashlights, candles, lighters, batteries, and clothes pins. You'll need all of this eventually. Showers might be rare and far between, but when they happen you'll want to shampoo and clean yourself. You'll also want somewhere to put the trash so it's not just laying around, and you might even want to clean sometime. So just make sure you're prepared.
Weapons. At some point you are going to have to fight for your life. It might even be every day, depending on how good you are at hiding. So get some weapons, and make sure they're good ones. I would recommend some kind of gun, and lots of ammunition, and a few choices for close combat weapons. I don't have any experience in fighting the undead, but I would probably assume that an ax, or sword would be a good choice. Maybe a sledgehammer. But then you have to take into account the weight of said weapon. Just make sure you have something, or you'll be sorry when there are 10 zombies knocking at your door and you are defenseless.
Spam. Now, I hate spam as much as the next person, but times will be rough. Wouldn't you rather there be 200 cans of spam in your cupboard than nothing? That's what I thought.
Once you have all of these, you are prepared to move onto Step 2 of surviving the zombie apocalypse.

I'd also consider using a silencer too - guns are extremely loud, but are effective at range. Bows take a lot of practice, but are worth the silence in the end. Crossbows are heavy, much more accurate but still take some practice. Slingshots require a lot of power and luck if you're going to shatter a skull, plus they require a lot of practice.
Many different weapons to use that are available. Just be sure to keep it legal until either the threat is handled or the apocalypse is confirmed - don't wanna be arrested when the threat has been quelled ^^

Wow, a nice Hub - reminds me a lot of Max Brooks' "Zombie Survival Guide". In this, you're clearly stating how to "survive" not "attack" the zombies, which is perfect!
I'd say in some countries it's hard to find a gun and use it in the early stages of a pandemic. In the UK, handguns are essentially banned, so you can't just run around with it when there's a zombie threat, as you'd still be taken down with them.
For weapons, I'd recommend the Crowbar - a large weapon that's incredibly light. It can shatter a skull with a grown man's swing, and it's a tool good for breaking open doors for a good escape, and barring off the undead too.
And just to parody a Romero quote, "When Hell is full with zombies, the Spam will walk the earth!"
